Frequently asked questions

What is pretend play?

It is the game of “make-believe”: the child replays everyday scenes and gives an object a role it does not have. They cook a meal, care for a doll, make a phone call. It is also called symbolic play or role play.

At what age does pretend play begin?

First imitations generally appear between 18 months and 2 years: the child pretends to drink or to phone. The play then becomes richer, with storylines and shared roles in a group from about 3 years.

Why is pretend play important?

It exercises language, because the child has to name, ask and tell. It helps the child make sense of what they experience and express emotions, and it trains playing with others: agreeing, waiting for a turn, keeping to a role.

How do you set up a pretend play corner in a daycare?

With a defined area, child-height furniture and few objects but several of each: a kitchen, crockery, food, then a theme that changes through the year (doctor, shop, workshop).
